JWSmith Photography | An Arid Muse

The arid American Southwest: Four major deserts; Mojave, Sonoran, Great Basin, and the northern Chihuahuan Desert cover a large portion of the southwest. Some, like my local Anza-Borrego Desert and many areas of the Colorado Plateau also have locally produced names such as the Colorado Desert which encompasses the western portion of the Sonoran Desert (including Anza-Borrego), and the beautiful Painted Desert which holds much of the Colorado Plateau and runs north of the Sonoran and south and east of the Great Basin deserts. The folks in Arches NP and Capitol Reef NP consider their areas Colorado Plateau High Desert but for the sake of simplicity (and for something more romantic sounding) I'll use Painted Desert for that area, as did David Hyde in his book Drylands.
